Position Description:

The long-term goal of the Glykys laboratory is to identify novel strategies to treat seizures and cytotoxic edema, especially in neonates. To reach this goal, we are addressing the following questions:

  1. How does the brain inhibitory system work at the cellular level
  2. How do neurons swell, what is the outcome of neurological swelling, and how can we treat it?

Research areas of the lab include:

  1. Changes in neuronal chloride, calcium, and cellular volume during pathological conditions.
  2. Neonatal seizures and epilepsy.
  3. GABAA receptor physiology

We approach these research areas with electrophysiological and imaging. The Postdoctoral researcher will be responsible for studying seizure initiation and propagation, using imaging (2-photon, whole brain imaging) and electrophysiology techniques. The position is within the Stead Family Department of Pediatrics, Division of Pediatric Neurology. The postdoctoral researcher will be under the supervision of Dr. Joseph Glykys, who is committed to the career development of trainees. Lab website:https://glykys.lab.uiowa.edu
