Position Description: |
The Obal lab utilizes human inducible pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) cells from patients (healthy and those of patients with cardiovascular diseases) as a platform to investigate the function of different G protein-coupled receptors, their molecular movements, and their interaction with other proteins within the cell membrane. We propose that understanding of single molecular movements will allow us to gain further insight in the receptor function and its interaction with intra- as well as extracellular proteins altered in chronic diseases like heart failure or ischemic cardiomyopathy. The thorough understanding of the receptors' function will subsequently help us to develop new ligands to specifically treat patients suffering from these common diseases and to develop more precise medications in the future. We will use nanoparticle technology to track single GPCR molecules on cardiovascular cells derived from healthy and diseased patients. Through our collaboration with the Stanford Cardiovascular Institute, the lab has access to one of the largest iPSC biobanks in the United States which will give us access to multiple cell lineages carrying mutation in multiple key genes of the cardiovascular system. |
