Job Summary:

The Department of Radiology, University of Wisconsin-Madison, School of Medicine and Public Health is seeking a motivated individual to serve as an Ultrasound Physicist as part of an academic career within the Department of Radiology at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor on the CHS (Clinical Health Sciences) Track.

The successful applicant will have a strong background in ultrasound physics, with interests and expertise in the application of advanced ultrasound methods in a busy clinical setting and translational research environment.

This vacancy is being announced simultaneously with Position Vacancy (Job #) 288192; please note that only one vacancy exists. Having two position vacancy listings allows the School of Medicine and Public Health to consider candidates with both tenure-track faculty credentials and non-tenure-track faculty credentials for this position.


Responsibilities:

The ultrasound physicist will have clinical service, research, and teaching responsibilities as described further below.

50% Clinical Ultrasound Physics Responsibilities
1. Assist in establishing institutional policies and guidelines regarding the safe and effective use of ultrasound imaging equipment and performance of procedures.
2. Trouble-shoot clinical issues on the ultrasound imaging equipment such as identifying and ameliorating image artifacts and other problems affecting clinical image quality. Coordinate with vendors to ensure that the ultrasound imaging equipment is properly and routinely serviced and maintained.
3. Contribute technical input to inform decisions regarding the purchase of new ultrasound imaging equipment, perform required acceptance testing of new ultrasound imaging equipment, and conduct ongoing Quality Assurance/ Quality Control (QA/ QC) of existing ultrasound imaging equipment, including activities required for maintaining accreditation.
4. Work with the Chief of the Imaging Sciences Section, the Medical Director of Ultrasound, and the Ultrasound Manager to address other issues related to clinical background.
5. Support the launch and development of the ultrasound-based histrotripsy ablation programs as it relates to ultrasound physics.

40% Research Ultrasound Physics Responsibilities
1. Conduct innovative ultrasound research independently, as well as in collaboration with other investigators in the Department of Radiology and in other departments and schools across campus and with industrial partners, including GE Healthcare.
2. Write, or assist in writing, grand applications to secure extramural funding to support independent as well as collaborative ultrasound research projects.
3. Serve as an institutional subject matter expert regarding specialized principles of ultrasound.
4. Develop and maintain tools and infrastructure to facilitate core ultrasound research initiatives.
5. Attend scientific conferences and meetings to present scientific research results, moderate sessions, and participate on committees and in working groups.
6. Write and submit manuscripts to professional journals describing results of research projects.
7. Mentor and conduct research with medical students, residents, clinical fellows, graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and/ or scientists.

10% Teaching
1. Educate clinical and research faculty, fellows, residents, sonographers, nurses, trainees, and other staff about the basic physical and technical principles of ultrasound and safety issues related to diagnostic and interventional ultrasound.
2. Assist in overseeing medical student rotations in ultrasound.
3. Provide basic didactic material for medical students, residents and fellows.
4. Provide educational ultrasound lectures at national and international meetings, as well as other public venues external to UW.
5. Work with the School of Diagnostic Sonography at UW by providing didactic lectures, consulting on curriculum design, and being available as a general ultrasound physics resource.

Education:

Required
PhD in medical physics or related field, with expertise in ultrasound physics


Qualifications:

- Certification by the American Board of Radiology (ABR) is encouraged.
- A track record of ultrasound-based basic or translational research and a track record of ultrasound physics education are assets.

In addition, excellent communication skills are required for interacting with a variety of ultrasound stakeholders including technologists, radiologists, residents, fellows and researchers.
