Geosyntec has an exciting opportunity for an Instrumentation and Monitoring (I&M) Geotechnical Engineer to join the I&M practice in our Acton, Massachusetts office. The position will apply I&M skills to projects involving dams, dikes, earth retaining structures, landfills, coal combustion residual impoundments, active construction sites, landslide, and other civil and geotechnical projects while further developing the business skills needed for a successful consulting career.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    Conduct geotechnical and environmental field investigations;
  • Design, install and manage I&M systems including instruments, data loggers, and telemetry;
  • Develop, implement, and manage data management solutions;
  • Evaluate instrumentation data and provide recommendations based on the measurements;
  • Manage long term I&M projects;
  • Perform engineering calculations and review data using traditional or computer-based technical tools (e.g., slope stability, excavation support, displacement, settlement, etc.);
  • Support design, permitting, and construction quality assurance for various non-I&M projects such as waste containment systems, dams, environmental remediation, earthquake engineering, and offshore structures;
  • Review and interpret geotechnical data such as boring logs and laboratory test results;
  • Develop construction documents (e.g., specifications, drawings, work plans);
  • Prepare and review I&M and engineering reports; and
  • Support proposal preparation, managing projects and tasks, and supporting business and staff development efforts.


Education and Licensure

  • Bachelor's degree in civil or geotechnical engineering. (required)
  • Advanced degree in geotechnical engineering. (preferred)
  • Professional registration (i.e., P.E., P.G.) (preferred)


Skills, Experience and Qualifications

  • At least 5 years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. (required)
  • Experience I&M tools such as inclinometers, SAAs, vibrating wire instruments, data loggers, cellular modems, and data management tools. (preferred)
  • Regular fieldwork and overnight travel. (required)
  • Excellent writing and communication skills. (required)
  • Health & Safety training, medical monitoring, and client-driven drug and background testing may be required.
  • Valid U.S. driver's license and a satisfactory driving record for business travel. (required)
