https://ualr.edu/facilities/ Summary of Job Duties:The Stationary Engineer is responsible for the safe operation of multiple high-pressure steam boilers, chillers, and related equipment, to supply and maintain steam or heat, cooling, and ventilation for buildings. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy. Qualifications:

Required Education and Experience:

  • The formal education equivalent to a high school diploma;

  • Level 1: Requires high-pressure Boiler Operator License from AR or equivalent license, in good standing from another US State;

    Level 2: Requires EPA Section 608 Universal Refrigerant Certification. Four or more years of work experience may be allowed as a substitute;

  • Must Possess a valid driver's license and be able to operate a motor vehicle.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Safely operate high-pressure steam boilers, chillers, compressors, and related equipment, to supply and maintain heating, cooling, and other building systems; make regular inspections of boilers, chillers, and other building systems, monitor and log readings of high-pressure boilers, low-pressure boilers, chillers, cooling towers, pumps, compressors, and related equipment; troubleshoot problems with equipment; adjust controls, as required if readings indicate problems;

  • Check temperature, pressure gauges, and water levels to ensure proper operating conditions for boilers, chillers, cooling towers, fan coils, heaters, pumps, and feedwater tanks; make regular inspections of boilers, chillers, and other building systems, and records water levels, boiler readings, and temperature gauge readings; Monitor and log readings of high-pressure boilers, chillers, cooling towers, pumps, and related equipment; adjust controls, as required, if readings indicate problems; troubleshoot problems with high and low-pressure boilers and related equipment;

  • Operate a variety of hand and power tools, welder torch, vacuum pump, test equipment utilized in the trade and a motor vehicle; maintain equipment ineffective and safe working condition; maintain parts and tool inventory;

  • Conduct regular preventive maintenance inspections of refrigeration units, isolated heating and ventilating units, including boilers, gas and electrically operated air conditioning equipment, and make necessary adjustments or repairs; service and repair evaporative coolers; conduct boiler water quality test and treatment; Test and examine boiler operations, observing meter and pressure gauges; Adjust boiler burner combustion; Flush boilers, descale tubing; rebuild pressure and temperature safety valves and water pumps; Prepare boilers for maintenance inspections for boiler inspectors and secure buildings and equipment and performs security checks;

  • Repair or replace defective parts in units and equipment and their controls, including thermostats, automatic switches, fan controls, log switches, damper motors, louvers, relays, filters, controls, belts, compressors, heat exchangers, high limit controls, pressure controls, safety valves, and automatic gas valves; lubricate and pack heating, ventilation, refrigeration, and air-conditioning motors, pumps, fans, and other equipment;

  • Check all pumps, lines, and fittings for safe and efficient operations;

  • Maintain related records concerning time, labor, and materials; maintain a log of tasks performed and write reports as required;

  • Must be able to follow verbal and written instructions;

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of state electrical and fire protection code procedures;

  • Knowledge of multiple boiler operations;

  • Knowledge of maintenance activities and various types of mechanical equipment;

  • Knowledge of safety precautions in a boiler operation;

  • Ability to maintain a regular maintenance schedule;

  • Ability to recognize malfunctions in boiler and other mechanical equipment;

  • Ability to make minor mechanical repairs;

  • Must be able to follow verbal and written instructions;

  • Must be able to wear a respirator;

  • Must be able to negotiate distances from building to building on campus and the ability to go up and downstairs in multi-story buildings;

  • Must be able to navigate in small spaces including manholes and tunnels to perform maintenance and/or make necessary repairs;

  • Must be able to hold, start, use and operate tools and equipment used in the skilled trade for extended periods;

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs;

  • Must be able to load/unload tools and equipment (weights varying up to 75 lbs.);

  • Must be able to communicate to campus community and co-workers;

  • Must be able to work a flexible shift, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
