Position Description:

The College of Education at the University of Iowa is making a major investment in addressing critical mental health issues. The Department of Counselor Education is working to make a significant impact in the field of rural mental health in the State of Iowa. We are seeking a dedicated and innovative faculty member to contribute to our growing Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program.

Position

The Department of Counselor Education at the University of Iowa invites applications for an open rank tenure-track, academic year faculty position in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program. Start date for the successful candidate will be negotiable but will begin no later than August 2025. We seek individuals with evidence of significant professional promise or accomplishments in research that impact mental health issues, including those in rural communities and schools.

The preferred candidate should be able to demonstrate the following through their work experience:







  • A commitment to student-centeredness, collaboration, and leadership development.





  • An ability to produce empirically driven and practically relevant research in Clinical Mental Health Counseling.





  • Skill in effective teaching and clinical supervision.





  • A commitment to professional service that advances the research, training, and clinical work intended to improve the lives of individuals living with mental health issues including those living in rural communities.





  • A commitment to the counseling profession as demonstrated by, for example, conference presentations, lectures, and professional memberships







The successful candidate will join a research and training partnership with Counselor Education and Supervision doctoral program, and the Clinical Mental Health Counseling MA program to teach graduate-level courses. This individual will also work in partnership with the Scanlan Center for School Mental Health. The program, following College of Education trends, has strong department, college, university, and clinical community support, and is committed to an environment that values diversity of background and perspective as well as collegiality. The preferred candidate will have a strong commitment to evidence-based and research informed clinical work and will be experienced in implementation of CACREP accreditation standards in mental health counselor education.

Job duties include:







  1. Serving as a core faculty member in the master's in Clinical Mental Health and the doctoral program in Counselor Education and Supervision.





  2. Teaching courses in Clinical Mental Health and in areas consistent with the candidate's interests and department needs.





  3. Conducting a program of research and publication in an area of specialization addressing clinical mental health, including in rural communities.





  4. Seeking and administering external grants for research, training, and service.





  5. Advising students at the master's and doctoral levels including clinical supervision.





  6. Supervising doctoral students' dissertations.

Education Requirement:

By August 2025, prospective candidates must have an earned doctorate in Counseling from a Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) accredited program, or a closely related field with a master's degree from a CACREP accredited program.

Required Qualifications:

Concentration or specialization in Clinical Mental Health Counseling

Evidence of potential for scholarly productivity, including publications recognized in the counseling, mental health counseling, or counselor education professions, or in related journals.

Evidence of and/or potential for securing external funding.

Experience in teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses and supervising students in practica/internships.

Be a National Certified Counselor [NCC], and/or Certified Clinical Mental Health Counselor [CCMHC] or be certification eligible.

Desirable Qualifications:

Demonstrated ability create and foster an academic environment inclusive of culturally, linguistically, racially, and socioeconomically different populations.

Demonstrated success in procuring competitive national or international funding for training, employment, research, and/or implementation of interventions.

Be a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC), a Licensed Professional Counselor, or eligible for counselor licensure in Iowa.

Experience teaching, supervising, and coordinating in a CACREP-accredited graduate program.

Experience with applied clinical research.
