Job Description

Position Summary

Supports the development, evaluation, implementation, and continuous improvement of cost-effective programs and procedures to ensure company operations comply with regulatory and corporate environmental requirements at company's former manufactured gas plant (MGP) sites. Provides technical oversight of environmental investigation/remediation activities including hydrogeological investigations as well as delineation of potential contamination in other various potentially impacted media (sediment, soils, air), statistical analyses supporting contaminant delineation, remedy alternatives analyses, selection and implementation and compliance with monitoring requirements. Develops corporate MGP records and related policies and procedures. Serves as an internal environmental consultant to support company operations and resolve specific questions and problems related to environmental issues. Assists in the development of the Environmental Department's strategy, budget development, and Environmental Liability Management. This role also includes participating in the Department's on-call duty 24 hours/day, 7 days/week on a rotating basis to respond to environmental incidents and to implement appropriate responses as needed.

You Will



  • Determines environmental compliance requirements and best management practices for former MGP sites
  • Supports the development and management of the MGP Program through execution of environmental covenants, oversees environmental consultants, reviews and revises progress reports by deadlines, supports development of budget and payment of expenses, and works closely with regulators to meet compliance requirements.
  • Negotiates permits and agreements with regulators and maintains compliance with such documents. Performs regulatory analysis, develops technical documentation, files government reports and maintains compliance records.
  • Provides technical oversight of environmental investigation/remediation activities including hydrogeological investigations as well as delineation of potential contamination in other various potentially impacted media (sediment, soils, air), statistical analyses supporting contaminant delineation, remedy alternatives analyses, selection and implementation and compliance with monitoring requirements
  • Participates in investigations, performs field studies, interprets hydrogeologic data, supports and monitors soil/groundwater/sediment remediation, and oversees contractors in the field.
  • Organizes company documents and creates written compliance summary for each remedial site including corporate strategy, environmental investigations, remedial measures, regulatory actions and ongoing requirements, etc.
  • Identifies environmental liability concerns and develops recommendations to improve internal controls, policies and procedures to maximize effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Provides guidance and direction to managers, supervisors, and other professionals to ensure corporate compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Researches and evaluates environmental regulations and standards, industry best practices and implements process improvements in compliance programs and tools as appropriate.
  • Supports the development and maintenance of project metrics for project tracking/analysis and prepares/ delivers reports to all levels of management and stakeholders to measure and explain environmental performance results.
  • Writes RFPs, evaluates bids, and manages work of contractors as needed.
  • Assists with maintaining Environmental Dept. records, performing research tasks, data mining, and statistical analysis. Develops and maintains databases using MS Excel or SharePoint. Assists in manual and electronic filing, and in the development of our internal Environmental Management Information System (EMIS).
  • Supports MGP Program by assisting in preparing reports, memos, data tables, permit applications, maps, etc.
  • Determines needs and maintains computer system/program requirements to optimize data collection, management, analysis, and reporting.
  • Other duties as assigned.


You Have



  • Bachelor's degree in Geology or Hydrogeology, or relative technical/scientific discipline is required. Professional registration as a Geologist or an Engineer, preferred.
  • Minimum of seven (7) years of related experience in managing environmental investigations and remediation projects at complex Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) sites and/or former MGP sites.
  • With a Bachelor's degree in a non-technical field, at least 8 years of professional experience in geological investigations, hydrogeologic applications, statistical analysis of hydrogeologic data, well design, rehabilitations and installations, well-field design, analytical and numerical groundwater flow and transport analyses and modeling or demonstrated equivalency of environmental compliance and remedial work experience. Or, with a non-technical bachelor's degree plus a Master's degree in a technical field, at least 5 years of professional experience in environmental compliance and remediation.
  • Experience with field work (groundwater/soil monitoring and collection), monitoring, report writing and analysis, and remediation required. Experience with Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA)/CERLCA and knowledge of river sediment remediation preferred.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of federal and state environmental regulations, remediation technologies, EPA analytical methods, relevant Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations, and industry standards.
  • General knowledge of natural gas industry operations and OSHA regulations preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify, measure and analyze environmental risks and develop appropriate programs, procedures and training to manage risks.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and document detailed data and to develop professional quality reports and presentations.


  • Demonstrated ability to present ideas logically and concisely to diverse audiences at all internal and external levels, both verbally and in writing.


  • Proven ability to use computer software and applications, including Microsoft Office Suite, Sharepoint, GIS, Bluebeam, Adobe, and other scientific or business software for data management, research, analysis and reporting purposes.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish rapport and effective working relationships with business partners, supervisors and peers.
  • Demonstrated ability to verbally communicate basic environmental and scientific information concisely and effectively to diverse groups.
  • Proven ability to establish strong working relationships with external and internal customers and regulatory agencies to effectively carry out work responsibilities.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license, 40 hour Hazwoper trained, and professional certifications as available.
