Position Description: |
Assistant Professor of Trombone - Tenure Track - Full Time Start Date: August 20, 2025 Review of Applications will begin October 7, 2024 and continue until filled. The School of Music seeks a motivated and collaborative artist-level trombone teacher and performer to join our esteemed faculty. An ideal candidate will show a commitment to leading and cultivating the UI Trombone Studio into a clear position of excellence by embracing the broader community, prospective and current students, faculty, and staff through recruitment, programming, and engagement. Primary responsibilities include teaching private lessons and recruiting trombone students. Additional duties include performing with the faculty brass quintet (Iowa Brass Quintet) and other School of Music faculty, coaching chamber ensembles, teaching courses in the brass pedagogy and literature curriculum, serving on recital and exam committees, advising DMA thesis projects, and participating in departmental and university service. It is also expected that the candidate be an outstanding performer and maintain an active performance schedule both on and off campus. Additional duties may be assigned in accordance with areas of expertise and in consultation with the Director of the School of Music. Preference will be given to applicants who have already established a national reputation as a performer and teacher. Required Documents for application:
- Letter of interest, including a statement on applicants' short- and long-term objectives and goals for their research and/or creative activities.
- Current curriculum vitae
- A one-page statement of teaching philosophy
- Video links to at least 3-5 live solo and chamber music performances, including at least one solo recital dating no earlier than 2021. Online links must be embedded in a word document and should be accessible by direct link through domains such as YouTube or Vimeo.No cuts are permitted, and dates of the performances should be included.
- PDF scans of representative solo and chamber recital programs with dates of performance
- Names and contact information for three professional references.
Optional Documents:
- A one-page statement outlining a proven track record for recruiting and retainment
- List of performed solo and chamber repertoire
- Videos of any additional performances that do not fall into the aforementioned recording criteria

- Demonstrated artistry as a performer
- Significant performing experience including solo, chamber, and large ensemble settings
- Demonstrated record of excellence in teaching trombone at the university level
- Demonstrated record of recruiting and retaining talented trombone students

Desirable Qualifications: |
- Doctorate in Music or equivalent professional experience
- Evidence of creative activity and research as demonstrated through both performances and presentations/publications
- Commitment to engagement and work with youth and community organizations such as youth orchestras, honor bands, music camps, music festivals, etc.
- Demonstrated record of commercial/jazz performance and related teaching experience
