CEI Roadway Inspector

S&ME is hiring a CEI Roadway Inspector to join our Transportation team in Columbia, South Carolina helping us provide engineering solutions to our clients.

What You Will Do:

As a CEI Inspector, you will play a key role in overseeing, administering, and inspecting transportation projects, including roadways, bridges, railways, pedestrian pathways, ports, and aviation facilities. Your primary responsibility will be to ensure that contractors meet all contract requirements, plans, and specifications. This position involves both indoor and outdoor work, exposing you to diverse weather conditions and field environments. Flexibility is essential, as extended hours, including weekends and holidays, may be required.



  • Monitor contractor activities, including earthmoving, paving, bridge construction, and traffic control. Ensure all work adheres to project plans and permits.
  • Keep thorough records by preparing daily diaries, material reports, and field books for contractor payments. Your documentation will be crucial for project success.
  • Conduct materials sampling, verify line and grade with survey equipment, and perform key calculations to ensure accurate construction processes.
  • Perform DBE and EEO compliance surveys and verify that erosion control devices meet all environmental and permit requirements.
  • Attend meetings, interact with third-party construction teams, and report to higher-level technical staff for project reviews.


Pay rate is based on the level of experience. Additional incentives are available for existing applicable certifications.

Who You Are:



  • You have a High school diploma/GED
  • You have 2 or more years of highway-related construction or inspection experience or a 2-year technical degree in Civil Engineering Technology or Surveying Technology or higher with 2+ years of highway-related construction or experience
  • You have the ability to supervise crew and/or a separate program function of moderate complexity
  • You have one or more SCDOT-based certifications
  • You have experience with SCDOT resurfacing projects including pavement markings, a plus
  • You have American Concrete Institute (ACI) Certification, or other materials certifications, a plus



Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

You are willing and able to perform the physical demands of this position with the use of Company-provided Personal Protective Equipment such as:



  • Working outdoors the majority of the time in varying weather conditions
  • Routinely lifting and carrying 40-50lbs, (field/laboratory samples and equipment)
  • Maneuver field equipment safely, such as a loaded wheelbarrow, on uneven ground and around active construction sites
  • Traveling out-of-town (typically overnight) for assignments as necessary
  • Working outside of normal business hours when necessary
