At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our diverse team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

We are a diverse team of collaborators, doers, and problem- solvers who are relentlessly committed to a culture of safety. This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your commitment and detailed attention towards safe and repeatable space flight. Join us in lowering the cost of access to space and enabling Blue Origin's vision of millions of people living and working in space to benefit Earth.

We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and commitment to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight. Passion for our mission and vision is required!

This position is part of the Space Systems Development (SSD) business unit. SSD develops next-generation concepts and systems to advance our future of living and working in space sustainably.

We believe that to preserve our planet, humanity must expand beyond our limits, venturing into space to explore and discover new energy and material resources. In pursuit of this vision, we invite you to join our dynamic Space Resources Program. We're dedicated to developing and demonstrating In-Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU) technologies for the Moon and beyond. If our mission resonates with you and you are eager to contribute, you could be the perfect addition to our inclusive, open-minded, and forward-thinking team.

In this hands-on role, you will work entirely onsite at our Los Angeles Facility with the Space Resources Program team. We're seeking a multidisciplinary electrical and power systems prototype engineer who can engage in all phases of a rapid product development cycle, from conceptualization to formal design, implementation, environmental testing, and final integration. We value self-motivated, hands-on individuals who can find practical solutions to abstract problems. This role requires experience in building powered systems (including power and data distribution, electronic part sourcing and commissioning, logic programming, and operational software development) from scratch.

Our teams work in fast-paced cycles of design, analysis, and construction to deliver a scalable solution. We're looking for someone adaptable, willing to take action, eager to learn, and committed to safety and quality. Your creativity, innovative spirit, and ability to navigate changing requirements are crucial.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • B.S. in electrical engineering, software engineering, or related discipline.
  • 7 years minimum relevant work experience.
  • Experience working all phases of power management (planning to implementation); identifying requirements, assessing power levels, identifying solution space (COTS vs. custom development), operation with facility or via spacecraft power bus, determining control parameters and operation modes, solution testing (EMI/EMC, ground loops, etc.), and mapping development of identified solution to a flight program.
  • Experience with high-power and high-voltage system operation and development.
  • Experience with subsystem integration and highly integrated system-level design.
  • Experience in electrical systems 'product' development, including COTS part selection, custom board and harness design, test, verification, and failure analysis.
  • Comfort in operating electrical systems/sensors (from unboxing to collecting data).
  • Ability to recognize power problems without having exact tasks and solve them with first order methods.
  • Understand ohmic heating principles and how it relates to power.
  • Ability to estimate power usage for heating elements, and power consumption and current requirements (average, transient, in-rush, etc.) for subsystems.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e. current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • M.S. in a relevant field.
  • 10+ years of relevant experience.
  • Experience with testing and operation of vacuum chambers.
  • Experience working flight projects and delivering flight hardware.
  • Experience in creating and maintaining system diagrams for power distribution, system grounding, and bonding.
  • Skill in generating EPS and power-consuming component models based on a combination of first principles, empirical information, and test data.
  • Knowledge of electrical standards and best practices in aerospace engineering, such as Electrical, Electronic, and Electromechanical (EEE) part best practices, and other relevant NASA, ESA, or mil-spec guidelines.
  • Proficiency in analyzing and determining compliant grounding/bonding strategies.
  • Ability to perform analyses such as voltage drop/line loss, component derating/stress analysis, thermal effects, and worst-case analysis.
  • Knowledge of Linux environment and basic scripting language (Python or C++).
  • Knowledge of versioning tools (Git, Windchill, or similar).
