https://fulbright.uark.edu/departments/sociology/ Summary of Job Duties:The Department of Sociology and Criminology in the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Arkansas invites applications for a tenured Department Chair of Sociology and Criminology to start in July 2025. This is a twelve-month faculty appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor.

In addition to performing the duties assigned to full-time faculty members with the Department of Sociology and Criminology at the University of Arkansas, the Department Chair will be responsible for the daily operation of the department and the department's programs as well as representing the department and its interests to college and campus leadership. The Department Chair will promote excellence in department programs within the University. Chair responsibilities are classified as professional duties requiring leadership and mentoring of faculty, administrative expertise to include vision, long-term and short-term planning, evaluation of unit personnel, decision-making and coordination of instruction.

Regular, reliable and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others.

About the Department
The Department is a very dynamic, productive, collegial, and student success-oriented unit in Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences. The Department offers undergraduate degrees in Sociology and Criminology, and an M.A. in Sociology, and affiliation with three research units: and affiliation with three research units: the Center for Social Research, Community and Family Institute, and the Terrorism Research Center. The Department participates in African and African American Studies, Latin American & Latino Studies, and other interdisciplinary area studies programs. The department contributes to the larger university strategic mission that is part of eight priority areas that have been outlined in detail in the Chancellor's guiding priorities. Minimum Qualifications:

With submitted materials, the candidate must demonstrate

  • PhD in Sociology, Criminology or related social science discipline conferred by start

  • Achievement of tenure and experience commensurate with the rank of Associate/Full Professor in a department of sociology, criminology or a related social science discipline

  • A record of successful university administrative and/or leadership experience in an academic department or program

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated administrative and/or leadership experience in a research intensive (R1) environment

  • A strong record of peer-reviewed publications in high impact journals and/or highly regarded academic presses

  • Demonstrated capacity to secure and maintain extramural funding in the form of grants, contracts and/or gifts

  • Demonstrated experience teaching in a program that serves both undergraduate and graduate students

  • Evidence of success in building a scholarly department through teaching, mentoring, research, outreach, and / or service

  • Demonstrated capacity to contribute to one or more departmental strengths in the areas of community, criminology, inequality/stratification, and health.

  • Demonstrated ability to foster a positive work environment and constructive interpersonal relationships

  • Demonstrated ability to work collectively to foster belonging within our discipline and for the diverse communities we serve
