Job Description
The Resident Assistant (RA) is a liaison between the Office of University Housing and the students living within the residential community. RAs are responsible for facilitating an environment conducive to living and learning through role modeling, programmatic opportunities, maintenance referrals, and policy enforcement. RAs are also given training in the fall and spring in order to learn what is necessary to perform duties and responsibilities effectively.

All new hires are required to participate in both Fall and Spring Semester Training and will be expected to assist with the fall move-in weekend and extended orientation during this time. All candidates are expected to participate in the entire training.
Primary Responsibilities
While performing the duties of this job, an RA is regularly required to:
* Effectively communicate, give directions, and lead students in the event of an emergency
* Read documents such as policy manuals and safety procedures
* Prepare reports and correspondences
* Lock and unlock doors using a key system
* Operate the master key release system
* Observe surroundings, identify problems or students in distress and respond according to University Housing protocol
* Respond immediately to potential crisis situations throughout the entire building
or area during all hours that an RA is on duty
* Plan, execute, and support community development efforts, including monthly programs and intentional interactions with residents
* Conduct regularly scheduled room safety checks, perform resident check-ins and check-outs and attend weekly hall staff meetings
* Work a minimum of 6 hours a week at a residential desk
* Serve night and weekend duty on a rotating schedule
* Complete assorted tasks as assigned, such as key inventories, maintenance checks, and preparing check-in packets
Qualifications
To be eligible to begin employment, RAs must have a 2.5 cumulative and semester GPA accumulated as of their start date. An RA must maintain a 2.5 cumulative and semester GPA (3.5 for grad students) and must be enrolled as a full-time student (12 or more hours as an undergraduate student; 9 or more as a graduate student).

RAs cannot teach or have an internship during their employment and must have permission from their supervisor to work an outside job. Outside jobs limited to 10 hours a week or less will be considered for approval but are not guaranteed. In addition, students must be in good standing financially and behaviorally with the university.

Candidates who are offered an RA position must undergo a pre-employment criminal background check as mandated by state law.
