The Senior Payroll Tax and Compliance Specialist will ensure adherence to payroll wage, tax and labor regulations at federal, state and local levels. This position requires a strong comprehensive understanding of multi-state tax and laws, federal regulations, and wage and hour laws. And will work closely with internal teams to ensure that systems and policies are compliant. A hybrid work schedule is available for this position.

Location: Chicago, IL; Rochester, NY

  • Ensure the firm's payroll system and practices are compliant with local, state, and federal regulation regarding payroll tax, wage and hour laws on an ongoing basis.
  • Stay informed about state mandates, leave policies, and other relevant regulations.
  • Provide departmental support for payroll, tax, benefits and HR to ensure policies and procedures are compliant.
  • Continually research federal, state and local laws to support compliance with changing legislation.
  • Ongoing maintenance of payroll tax accounts in all operating jurisdictions to ensure accurate reporting and filings.
  • Handle escalated issues, tax agency notices or tax audits for federal, state and local taxes.
  • Provide ad-hoc reporting within the organization, including year-end audits, and worker's comp. Assist with year-end audits and reporting.
  • Act as project lead for Dayforce upgrades and releases and special projects.
  • Provide support in a backup capacity to the payroll team.

Job Requirements:
  • 7+ years of experience working in payroll with minimum 5 years of experience working with multistate payroll tax and compliance.
  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) designation (preferred).
  • Dayforce knowledge and experience a plus.
  • Associate's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong knowledge of federal, state and local payroll tax laws and regulations.
  • Understanding of FLSA rules and regulations.
  • Strong knowledge of payroll practices, including but not limited to multi state taxing.
  • Familiarity with payroll software and reports specifically Dayforce.
  • Proficiency in Windows-based software applications, with an emphasis on Excel
  • Demonstrated problem-solving, analytical and mathematical skills.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills to deliver excellent customer service.
  • Excellent organizational skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and competing demands.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team interacting with all levels of Firm personnel.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding employee and financial matters.

In accordance with applicable Federal and State laws, the anticipated annual salary range for this position, depending on location, is as follows:

  • Rochester, NY: $72,953 to $104,346
  • Chicago, IL: $83,896 to $119,997

In addition to a standard benefits package, this role may be eligible for additional contingent compensation based on an array of factors, including but not limited to: work performance, geographic location, work experience, education, and qualifications. Because such contingent compensation is not yet calculable or may be zero ($0) in some circumstances, the above-listed salary range(s) are Nixon Peabody's good faith estimate of the annual salary(ies) it reasonably expects to pay for the position at the time of this posting.
