Overview
The Director of Construction Management works with key leadership and the development team on construction projects as well as capital repairs, and major renovations agency wide. Why work for DePaul?
Responsibilities
- Coordinates, manages, and monitors contractors, their staffing and operational activities for the assigned construction duration; responds to questions and inquiries from the general public, developers, contractors, and engineering professional regarding construction projects.
- Participates in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, and priorities; recommends resulting policies and procedures.
- Identifies opportunities for improving methods and procedures; identifies resource needs; reviews with appropriate management staff; recommends improvements; ensures construction files and records are appropriately maintained.
- Directs, coordinates, and reviews the work plan for construction services and activities; assigns work activities and coordinates the work of professional and engineering staff and private contractors; monitors workflow; reviews and evaluates work products, methods, and procedures; meets with general contractor, architects, and engineers to identify and resolve problems.
- Supervises and reviews the highest design of assigned construction projects for clarity and constructability; directs the preparation and/or review of plans, specifications, estimates, and contracts for assigned projects to ensure highest and best design at most efficient utilization.
- Participates in the preparation and administration of construction budgets; monitors and approves expenditures; recommends adjustments as necessary.
- Provides staff assistance to senior management; conducts a variety of studies and investigations; develops and recommends modifications to construction pipeline, policies, and procedures as appropriate.
- Coordinates construction and inspection activities with those of other departments, outside agencies, and organizations; resolves sensitive and controversial issues.
- Integrate sustainability considerations into every phase of the construction process, from project planning and design to execution and delivery.
- Performs a variety of construction conflict resolution duties; resolves engineering problems in the construction phase with advisement from the design consultants; acts to resolve construction and inspection problems with project contractors, private engineers, and owner/ developers.
- May represent the agency at planning meetings or other public meetings; prepare and present reports and other necessary correspondence.
- Attends and participates in professional group meetings; stays abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of housing.
- Works agency-wide on development of physical plants including all programmatic and administrative new development and existing renovations.
- Works closely with architects, construction teams, and DePaul staff on turnover of sites to the operating entity in DePaul.
Qualifications
- Strong commitment to safety, teamwork, and passion for real estate development
- 5 years of experience in the field of architecture, construction management, or engineering
- Degree or certification in project management, construction management, or related field
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Strong leadership and team building skills
- Strong organizational skills with exquisite attention to detail
- Ability to interact effectively with internal staff as well as development team that includes architects, engineers, contractors, and contracted services with an understanding of protocol and providing a high degree of discretion when dealing with confidential information.
- Functional knowledge of computer systems, basic understanding of business accounting, ability to multi-task, and the ability to learn new systems.
- Sensitive to people with special needs and the end users of our facilities.
- Ability to travel between locations; this position also requires a clean NYS driving record as outlined in DePaul's policies.
