Summary: At Port Newark Container Terminal, the Assistant Operations Manager in the Rail Department will ensure a smooth and efficient rail operation on rotating shifts, interacting regularly with rail operators, terminal operations, and union personnel. The Assistant Operations Manager supervises the movement of rail containers based on vessel arrivals and container availability.

Essential Duties:



  • Supervises union personnel carrying out day-to-day activities managing safety, productivity, and accuracy of the PNCT Rail Operation.
  • Ensure operational coordination between PNCT Marine Terminal and PNCT on Dock Rail Yard for Hustlers, RTG's and Reach Stackers.
  • Follows safety guidelines and enforces safety rules and procedures among labor personnel.
  • Supervises train movement, when it is arriving or departing from the rail yard.
  • Uses Outlook and NAVIS in order to trace boxes, release issues, etc.
  • Prepares daily production report; provides information to steamship lines for status on containers.
  • Communicates with local CSX personnel on a daily basis, regarding scheduling times, inbound and outbound traffic, and so forth.
  • Allocates labor resources as tasks and activities shift during the day, maximizing the use of labor throughout the shift. Prepares daily labor report for payroll purposes.
  • Coordinates discharge and loading priorities with the steamship lines.
  • Resolves customer issues with respect to the movement of containers, released containers, holds on containers due to customs or government inspections, imports and exports.
  • Provides assistance in reports developed for Finance and other terminal management.
  • Performs other related duties as requested.
  • Other duties as assigned.



Minimum Requirements (Education, Experience, Certifications):



  • College degree or equivalent operations, logistics, or related experience.
  • 3-5 years terminal operations experience within the logistics/transportation industry, with at least one year in rail/yard operations is preferred.


  • Requires the ability to obtain a TWIC Card issued by the Department of Homeland Security.
  • Requires the ability to obtain a Pier Superintendent License issued by NJ State Police.

  • Sense of Urgency & Self-Starter Mentality A MUST.
  • Requires good leadership skill.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • High level of planning and organizational skills.
  • Requires ability to respond quickly and adapt to changes.
  • Requires the ability to plan and organize multiple projects in fast paced environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with union and management staff.
  • Knowledge of safety and accident prevention codes and regulations and related industry governmental regulations.
  • Exceptional time management, due to fast-moving, demanding work environment.


  • Must be computer literate; proficient with Microsoft Office - Outlook, Word, and Excel.


  • Must have good knowledge of intermodal transportation concepts, operations, networks, and equipment capabilities (including lift equipment and other mechanical aspects unique to intermodal shipping) and rules governing TOFC/COFC operations.


  • Requires the availability to work varied hours and shifts including days, nights, weekends and holidays as needed.



Working Conditions:



  • Frequent walking, standing, bending, occasional sitting.
  • The ability to climb up and down stairs and equipment multiple times within a shift.
  • Requires physical ability to work on a ship and in a yard.
  • The ability to use a computer/keyboard.
  • The ability to work in changing hot and cold climates based on weather conditions.
  • The ability to work in an environment with moving objects and machinery.
  • The environment may be hazardous to persons unable to see or hear fast moving heavy equipment.
