Minimum Qualifications
A Master's degree in parks, recreation, or tourism management, or a related Master's degree (e.g., outdoor education/leadership, human dimensions of natural resource management).

  1. professional work experience in parks, recreation, or recreational tourism settings with responsibilities that included program development/delivery/administration, or outdoor experiential education and/or leadership development, or parks, recreation, and tourism site/facility management.
  2. higher education teaching experience in parks, recreation, or tourism management or a related area (e.g., human dimensions of natural resource management).

Description of the Department or Unit
Appalachian State University's Beaver College of Health Sciences (BCHS) is transforming the health and quality of lives of individuals, families, and communities through inclusive practices, interprofessional collaboration, and innovation in teaching, scholarship, service, and clinical outreach. The BCHS supports over 3,400 students in nine undergraduate and nine graduate degree programs, organized into six academic departments. The programs are located in Boone in the Holmes Convocation Center and the Leon Levine Hall of Health Sciences, the cornerstone of Boone's Wellness District. We also have a presence on our new campus in Hickory. The college supports the Appalachian Institute for Health and Wellness and has a collaborative partnership with the Wake Forest School of Medicine's Physician Assistant Program and multiple health and human service agencies across the region. The RMPE department enrolls around 350 majors and is comprised of Recreation Management, Health, Physical Education & Coaching, and Physical Education Activity programs. The Recreation Management program has 240 students and has been continuously accredited by the Council on Accreditation for Parks, Recreation, Tourism and Related Professions ( COAPRT) since 2001. The program has a faculty with backgrounds and experience in the entire spectrum of recreation. A combination of classroom and hands-on experience with one-on-one advising is emphasized. The Recreation Management program is fortunate to be located in the mountainous northwest corner of North Carolina. The region includes Mount Mitchell (the highest peak east of the Rockies), the Blue Ridge Parkway, the New River (part of the Wild & Scenic Rivers System and an American Heritage River), Grandfather Mountain, several NC state parks, four ski resorts, the Pisgah National Forest, and numerous recreation oriented resorts and private developments. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teach classes each Fall and Spring Semester (total of 24 credit hours per academic year).

    • Most, if not all, courses will be offered in-person, with the Lecturer supporting the required (Core) courses that all students majoring in Recreation Management (RM) must take.



  • The Lecturer will also be expected to support one or more of the three RM Concentrations.
  • Attend RM faculty meetings and other RM scheduled events.

Suggested Salary Range Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

ABD Description
ABD with reduction in rank and salary: ABD will be considered for this position. Evidence of successful defense of the dissertation must be received by July 31 for a fall hire or November 30 for a spring hire. If confirmation of defense is not provided by the deadline, the candidate will receive a new one-year fixed-term contract and be hired at the rank of Instructor. The candidate's salary will also be reduced to a lower rate commensurate with other full-time instructors in the same department. However, if degree verification is provided before the end of the one-year fixed-term contract, the candidate will be returned to the rank of assistant professor with commensurate compensation beginning July 1 of the following academic year.

No ABD consideration: Only candidates with an earned doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited institution will be considered for the position. Since ABD will not meet the minimum requirements, ABD will not be considered.
