About the Department:

The School of Law has two fundamental missions. First it prepares students to use their law degree in a broad range of public and private sector organizations with the Commonwealth and around the world. Second, it produces academic scholarship that expands society's understanding of law and legal institutions with a special focus on using economic tools and methods to do so.

About the Position:

The Assistant Director of Academic Administration serves as the starting point for all law school academic administration matters, including: the support of adjunct faculty; the management of the teaching evaluation processes at the law school; the preparation and publication of course schedule documents; the management of courses in GMU's systems. In addition this position supports students, faculty, and staff in day-to-day administrative matters.

Responsibilities:

Supports Adjunct Faculty



  • Serves as the first point-of-contact for adjunct faculty matters;
  • Ensures adjunct faculty job postings reflect current needs of the law school;
  • Regularly checks postings for qualified applicants and makes recommendations for hire to the Associate Dean for Academic Administration;
  • Prepares, sends, and collects employment contracts for adjunct faculty;
  • Maintains up-to-date information for adjuncts on the online Adjunct Information Portal;
  • Maintains a roster of adjunct faculty with up-to-date teaching assignments and contact information;
  • Collects adjunct faculty resumes and transcripts, and files with the Provost's Office as appropriate;
  • Schedules adjunct orientation sessions and greets adjuncts in the first week of the semester;
  • Provides regular updates and reminders to adjunct faculty on deadlines and law school requirements; and
  • Provides instructional and logistical support for adjunct faculty proactively, and as issues arise.


Publishes and Updates Course Schedules



  • Assists the Associate Dean for Academic Administration in the preparation of fall, spring, and summer course schedules;
  • Creates, publishes, and updates semester course schedule documents and registration information documents in collaboration with the Law Records Office and the Associate Dean for Academic Administration; and
  • Manages law courses in Banner and/or CourseLeaf under the direction of the Associate Dean for Academic Administration, and in partnership with the Law Records Office.


Ensures Quality



  • Supports the course evaluation process, including sending reminders to faculty, answering inquiries about the process, and liaising with the OIEP;
  • Assists the Associate Dean for Academic Administration in summarizing course evaluation results each semester; and
  • Coordinates full-time faculty and administrators in scheduling observations of adjunct teaching to facilitate timely and actionable feedback.


Administrative Support



  • Collects syllabi from adjunct faculty;
  • Provides support to students, faculty, and staff as academic administration issues arise;
  • Pulls data on courses, enrollment, and faculty upon request; and
  • Supports exam review sessions by surveying for availability, scheduling, pulling exams, and proctoring; Updates and consults with colleagues as appropriate to ensure timely and accurate information sharing.

Required Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's degree in related field or the equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Demonstrated experience managing multiple projects and competing deadlines;
  • Experience managing professional communications to various constituencies;
  • Exceptional customer service and communication skills (both orally and in writing);
  • Organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to handle multiple tasks at one time;
  • Ability to work independently and demonstrate good judgment; and
  • Strong command of data management and Excel.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Master's degree in related field or J.D.; and
  • Considerable experience (typically 3 years and more) in management in an academic setting, to include supporting faculty.
