Construction Materials Engineering Technician

S&ME is looking for a motivated passionate experienced Construction Materials Engineering Technician to join our Construction Services team in Wilmington, North Carolina. Are you ready to contribute your experience and knowledge to meaningful projects? Join us at S&ME!

As a Construction Materials Engineering Technician, you will have a company vehicle to perform field testing and observations of construction materials on project sites. It is our job to make sure it is "built right", and at S&ME we take that responsibility very seriously. You will have the opportunity to obtain additional certifications to help you advance in your career, perform more complex testing, take on more responsibilities, and mentor younger technicians.

Your Day-to-Day:



  • Review construction plans and specifications to ensure seamless alignment with on-site observations
  • Conduct as well as observe testing and inspections of construction materials including soil, concrete, asphalt, and other relevant materials, to ensure compliance with project specifications and industry standards
  • Utilize advanced software like Metafield to document reporting and testing results
  • Calibrate equipment to industry standards to ensure precision in testing processes
  • Conduct Special Inspection observations to enforce regulatory compliance and quality assurance on projects
  • Maintain open communication with stakeholders to foster trust and transparency, driving the success of our projects



What You Bring:



  • A High School diploma/GED
  • 3+ years of experience in construction testing/inspections of soil, concrete, masonry, and/or asphalt materials
  • Four (4) or more active certifications:

    • American Concrete Institute (ACI): Field Testing Grade I; Strength Testing Technician; Laboratory Technician
    • International Code Council (ICC): Special Inspector (Reinforced Concrete, Masonry, Soils)


  • Effective communication skills (speaking, reading, and writing) using the English language
  • Effective math skills with a basic understanding of weight, volume, pressure, and units of measure



Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

You are willing and able to perform the physical demands of this position with the use of Company-provided Personal Protective Equipment:



  • Working outdoors in varying weather conditions outside normal business hours, as needed
  • Walking over rough and uneven terrain, maneuvering field equipment safely, such as a loaded wheelbarrow
  • Routinely lifting and carrying 40-50lbs, (field/laboratory samples and equipment)
  • Traveling out-of-town and possibly overnight for assignments as needed
