Job Summary:

The Department of Surgery, Division of Plastic Surgery, is currently recruiting a PhD level Scientist to join our renowned research team and serve as the principal basic scientist for a division of 12 faculty and 18 residents. This is an opportunity for basic research discovery in biomedical engineering, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, as well as for translation of promising technologies into clinical trials and ultimately to improve the lives of patients. The successful candidate will serve as co-director of the Microsurgery and Regenerative Medicine Lab (MSRM). The MSRM has a research theme of clinical and experimental microsurgery, with an emphasis on peripheral nerve regeneration and repair.

The UW Department of Surgery consists of more than 160 faculty across eleven specialty divisions, performing more than 25,000 operations annually. The Department also trains more than 70 residents and fellows and is consistently ranked amongst the top surgery programs with extramural research funding, currently 7th in the nation according to Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research. The department provides a robust infrastructure of services including academic resources such as The Wisconsin Surgical Outcomes Research Program (WiSOR), which provides support, resources, and a collaborative environment to facilitate surgical health services research at the University of Wisconsin. The Department's Office of Clinical Research provides coordinator support for Clinical Trials as well regulatory support for research, and the grants management team provides comprehensive pre-award to post- award support. The Surgical Collaborative of Wisconsin also provides access to a network of surgeons throughout the state and this platform provides opportunities for collaborative quality improvement that improves the care of surgical patients throughout the state and region.


Responsibilities:

In this leadership position, the candidate will be expected to develop an independent, federally funded research lab, and will work independently and with collaborators to develop novel solutions that build the foundation of a successful and sustainable research program. Additionally, the candidate must prioritize collaboration and collegiality. The successful candidate will also be expected to teach, and provide mentorship to, undergraduate students, medical students, plastic surgery residents, graduate students, and post-doctoral fellows. The Microsurgery and Regenerative Medicine Lab serves as the primary teaching space for microsurgery in the Department of Surgery and the successful candidate will be expected to oversee these efforts along with a well-established MD/microsurgeon educator.

(30%) Conduct basic and translational scientific research in biomedical engineering, neural engineering and regenerative medicine that will form the backbone of an internationally recognized research program.
(25%) Provide project oversight, identify research problems and potential solutions, and design and execute research methodologies.
(15%) Microsurgery training lab oversight and supervision of education research.
(10%) Identify and submit successful applications for government and foundation grants. Pursue collaborations internally, nationally and internationally.
(10%) Supervise multidisciplinary teams.
(10%) Prepare research results for publication and presentation at local, national and international meetings.

The applicant will participate in administrative and committee work to support the clinical and scholarly missions of UW Health and the School of Medicine and Public Health. An essential part of these duties will be working in a collegial relationship with other faculty members.

Education:

Required
PhD in Biomedical Science, or other closely related field is required on or before the date of appointment letter.


Qualifications:

Candidates must have at least 2 years full-time post-doctoral laboratory training or experience in a relevant basic science setting by the start date.

Additional experience in the following areas is preferred:
- Experience with translational neuroscience, neural control of locomotion, electrical stimulation to promote bone growth and wound healing.
- Demonstrated expertise in research design, data analysis and data dissemination.
- Electrode design for in vivo neural recordings.
- Demonstrate expertise in education research as it applies to the field of microsurgery/plastic surgery.
- Behavioral analysis of animals with peripheral nerve injury/disease
- Experience or interest in prosthetic development
- Specialization in biomedical engineering, tissue engineering or regenerative medicine

Competencies that the selected finalist for this role will possess include: Written and Verbal Communication Skills, grant writing, leadership and an ability to collaborate effectively.

Located on an isthmus between two lakes, Madison is the capital city of the state of Wisconsin.
