Position description

The University of California, Irvine School of Law invites applications for two Visiting Assistant Professors of Lawyering Skills/Visiting Professors of Lawyering Skills for the 2024-2025 school year. One visit will be for the full year, while the other visit will be solely for the fall semester.

Lawyering Skills is a two semester, six-unit course that satisfies the Law School's 1L experiential course requirement for graduation, described below.

The full-year Visiting Professor of Lawyering Skills will teach the following courses:



  1. Fall Semester: One section of Lawyering Skills I. In the fall semester, the focus is teaching skills that all lawyers use, such as client counseling and interviewing, legal analysis and communication, and extensive legal research.
  2. Spring Semester: Two sections of Lawyering Skills II. In the spring semester, the focus is on more advanced legal research, analysis, and communication skills. This includes particular attention on written and oral advocacy as well as fact investigation, contract drafting, and negotiation. Over the course of the two semesters, all students will have gained experience conducting intake interviews of actual clients of local public interest organizations. Legal research will continue to be emphasized.


The fall semester Visiting Professor of Lawyering Skills will teach the following course(s):



  1. One section of Lawyering Skills I. In the fall semester, the focus is teaching skills that all lawyers use, such as client counseling and interviewing, legal analysis and communication, and extensive legal research.
  2. One upper-level skills course or other course of need to the law school. UCI Law offers a wide variety of upper-level courses designed to prepare students to practice law at the highest levels of the legal profession. Examples of courses visitors have taught in the past include Appellate Advocacy, Litigation Skills & Strategy, and Race & the Law. The decision for an upper division course will be made in consultation with Associate Dean Rachel Croskery-Roberts and Vice Dean Trilby Robinson-Dorn.
